Wicker is not a material but a process. It is the art
of weaving with reed, willow or sea grasses. At Bielecky, wicker is always
woven of reed, thin poles of rattan, extracted from a solid section of the
vine. Since this reed is composed entirely of material from the core of the
plant, it is porous, absorbing stain much more readily and evenly than cane
or unpeeled rattan poles. Besides being woven to produce the wicker parts of
furniture, this reed can be wrapped around a rattan frame for a bold
sculptural effect. |
